Privacy and Disclosure Policies

Can I be honest with you? When I hear words like “best practices” and “full disclosure,” I feel my inner eyelid close. It’s like a small piece of my soul breaks off and dies. I know I’m sounding overly dramatic, but UGHHHHH. The vocabulary used is weighty and obscure. There is no story line to fill in my imagination. No prose to add meaning to my life. Just an overly wordy explanation designed to keep everybody safe and secure and above board and all.

Okay. So maybe privacy and disclosure policies are a good thing. And I do appreciate it when websites tell me they’re going to value my privacy and not sell my information to the trolling hordes that lurk on the interweb. So, yes, I get the need for this bit of important information on my site. The problem is, my need to get everything correct before I start anything new means taking care of this detail has been the cause of significant procrastination. I want to understand what I’m putting on my website. I don’t just want to copy and paste a bunch of information that I don’t quite understand. Someday, when I have more than 5 people following my site, I’ll have a pro take a stab at all of this, but in the meantime, a pre-made form it will have to be.

So, before I copy and paste the legalese, let me just explain things to you in words that I can understand. Person to person. Friend to (hopefully) soon-to-be-friend.

  1. I value your privacy. I don’t like it when someone shares my info without my permission. If you choose to provide your name and email address to me for whatever reason, I promise that I will follow the golden rule, and will treat it the way I want my email to be treated. No sharing without your consent.
  2. I don’t like getting inundated with emails, unless they are emails that I’ve chosen to receive and add value to my life. Unless you want to hear from me, I promise not to interfere with your precious inbox. And if you are ever ready to move on, or just need to give your inbox some breathing room, I will be happy to oblige by unsubscribing you from my list (once I have one, that is).
  3. I don’t know what LOG files are. There’s something down below about log files and analytics and the way websites and hosting companies work. If you need to understand more, you can read about them below.
  4. I know a lot about cookies (these Oat-rageous Chocolate Chip ones are delicious), but not much about what to do with the ones that are stored about your preferences when you visit my site. Again, you can read what I need to tell you about that subject below.
  5. Double-click DART cookies and Advertising Partners? At present, I don’t understand, use or participate in these services, but I figured I’d better keep them on the list just in case. They must have included them in the template for a reason, so my worrisome self is choosing to cover my bases. And who knows? There may come a day that I’ll be needing some income so I can have this page done by that pro we talked about earlier. For now, I’m just looking for some connection and an exhale.

If you want to read the details on the above … and even more … keep reading. I commend your diligence and follow-through. Oh, and for even more fun, you can find my Disclosure Policy down below too!
